Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), has warned ‘desperate’ politicians to stop dragging its name into politics as it would no longer tolerate people who drop its name to further their political ends.
This warning is sequel to the allegation raised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) last weekend that the EFCC has concluded plans to arrest and frozen the account of some of its key financiers.
The Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde, gave the warning while presenting “Red Alert on Scam”, a special publication of the EFCC, to the press in his office, in Abuja, on Monday.
“Red Alert on Scam” is an initiative of Media and Publicity Unit of the Commission, conceived as an enlightenment publication to educate members of the public on the antics of fraudsters, with a view to helping them avoid falling victims of fraud.
The EFCC Chairman further noted that his Commission does not need the prompting of anybody to open investigation against anyone that has violated the law.
Lamorde also warned job seekers to be weary of people who offer to get them jobs, noting that the safeguard to prevent falling prey to such scam is to verify the information by contacting the agencies concerned.
“The Commission is equally alarmed by some of the antics and unguarded comments by politicians in the last few weeks, imputing political motives to the activities of the Commission.
“First, was a fake letter purportedly from the office of the Chief of Staff to the President directing the Commission to investigate some political figures .
“A political party addressed the media over the weekend, claiming the EFCC plans to arrest its leaders. There is also another fake letter in circulation, claiming the EFCC is investigating a former education minister.
“Let me say here that EFCC does not need prompting of anybody to open investigation against anyone that has violated the law. But it does the nation no good when politicians seek to use the name of the Commission to further their political objectives.”
