Myanmar warplanes fighting separatist rebels dropped a bomb at a sugarcane field in China, killing four civilians, the latter's state media reported Saturday.
China summoned Myanmar's ambassador in Beijing following the incident, which occurred Friday in the Chinese border city of Lincang, Xinhua news agency reported.
In addition to the fatalities, nine others were wounded, Xinhua said.
Chinese officials condemned the
incident, with Liu Zhenmin, the deputy foreign minister, calling on Myanmar to open an investigation and to "punish the perpetrator," the news agency reported.
Myanmar forces have been battling ethnic separatist rebels in the rugged border region across from Yunnan province in recent weeks.
