The Police in Kano on Wednesday arraigned a 54-year-old man, Kabiru Usman and 53 others in a Nomansland Magistrates’ Court for alleged possession of dangerous weapons and Indian Hemp. The accused were also charged for criminal conspiracy,
illegal dealing and distribution of drugs and managing unlawful society. The Police Prosecutor, Cpl. Suleiman Usman, told the court that the offence contravened section 97, 97B and 103 of the penal code and section 7(1) Cap 91 of dangerous drugs and food processing. Usman said the accused were arrested at Fagge Quarters, Kano, by the police and other security operatives during a raid at some criminal hideouts.The prosecutor said a polythene bag containing wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp with 10 bottles of palm wine, three scissors and one knife were discovered. When the charges were read to the accused, two pleaded not guilty. The Presiding Officer, Magistrate Nafisa Hassan, however, granted the accused bail with two reliable sureties. “One should be a civil servant on grade level 12, while the other should be a businessman with a Certificate of Occupancy in Kano,” he said. She adjourned the case until April 7, for summary trial.
