At least one young protester has been killed and two others injured when Indian forces opened fire to disperse a group of people demonstrating in the disputed Indian-administered Kashmir region.
On Saturday, scores of people staged a rally in Narbal district on the outskirts of Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar to express their resentment over the detention of pro-independence leader Masarat Alam and the killing of a youth at the hands of Indian troopers.
Locals say the demonstration was largely peaceful until Indian forces stormed the demonstrators and fired shots to break up the rally. The protesters pelted stones at Indian soldiers in return.
A 17-year-old Kashmiri student, identified as Suhail Ahmad Sofi, lost his life, while two others sustained gunshot wounds.
