First Bank to fire 1,000 workers

FBN Holdings Plc, the parent company of First Bank Nigeria Limited, is planning to cut about 1000 jobs and focus less on providing loans to the oil industry in a bid to reverse  the 2015 financial year’s 82 per cent slump in profit.
The lender expects to boost its return on equity, a key measure of profitability, to between 11 per cent and 14 per cent in 2016 from last year’s “really bad” figure of three per cent, according to the Chief Executive Officer of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, FBN’s main subsidiary, Mr. Adesola Adeduntan.

Withdraw from Saraki’s trial, Eminent lawyers advise Umar

SOME leading legal luminaries including former justices of the Supreme Court have advised Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Mr. Danladi Umar, to withdraw from presiding the ongoing trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki over alleged false assets declaration to ensure fairness in the matter.

The legal giants, who picked holes in the Supreme Court judgement of February 5, 2016 giving the CCT jurisdiction in the Saraki trial, argued that the CCT is not a court of law under our Constitution and cannot be invested with criminal or quasi-criminal jurisdiction.

Lassa Fever, Cholera kill 90 in Ebonyi

EBONYI State government, yesterday, said 14 persons died of Lassa fever disease, while 83 suspected cases were recorded since the outbreak in January. It also lamented that the state lost 76 lives to Cholera outbreak, which affected 38 communities.

 The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezurike, who spoke while briefing newsmen on the level of successes the ministry had recorded, noted that the ongoing construction of the South-East Virology within the premises of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, FETHA, was already 95 percent completed, as all the equipment needed for the centre would arrive within the week.

According to Premium Times report, the Kwara State Government on Wednesday denied that president of the senate, Bukola Saraki, was receiving salaries for four years after his tenure as governor of the state ended.
The government was reacting to the claim of an investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, who testified before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, that Saraki was drawing salary from Kwara Government after he left office in 2011 and had been elected senator.

A 52-year-old night guard identified as Abdullahi, attached to a phone shop on Airport Road, in the Oredo LGA of Edo State, has been murdered in cold blood by armed robbers in the early hours of Monday. 
It was gathered that the suspected robbers were said to have invaded the premises and tried to gain entry into the shop by breaking one of its windows as Abdullahi, a father of three from Auchi, attempted to stop the robbers, but was overpowered.

Cooks at FGGC Akure were allegedly caught picking the used sanitary pads of students from waste bins allegedly for ritual purposes, three cooks who are employees of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Akure, have been arrested by men of the Ondo State Police Command.
The suspects, whose names were not released, were alleged to have taken the used pads of girls residing in the school to unknown places outside the school premises.

Nasarawa APC, PDP lawmakers trade blows


Members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly engaged in a free-for-all on Monday over the appointment of sole administrators for 11 local government councils by Governor Tanko Al-Makura.
The free-for-all occurred on the floor of the legislature barely two hours after the governor inaugurated the 11 sole administrators.

Glasses were shattered while tables and chairs were upturned in the violence that engulfed the House.
A faction that described the governor’s action as illegal was opposed by another faction that supported the action of the governor.

Lagos policeman shoots three at naming ceremony

Residents of Church Street in the Ijora Badia area of Lagos State say they have been living in fear after a policeman, identified as Inspector Ibrahim Odufarasin, allegedly shot sporadically during a naming ceremony, causing injuries to three residents.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the residents protested at the Public Advice Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, on Friday and also at the Oba of Ijora’s palace on Saturday to report Odufarasin, who they alleged had been terrorising them.

Shocking footage has emerged of a Muslim woman being mown down by a car in a hit-and-run during an anti-Islam rally in the Brussels district of Molenbeek. 
Video footage of the incident shows the white Audi A1, which had ploughed through a police road block, driving head-on into the woman as she crossed the road.
The woman was thrown off the car's bonnet and skidded along the road, while the driver continued moving forward and appeared to run over her legs. 

El Rufai challenges Apostle Suleiman

Governor Nasir El Rufai has challenged the prophet who predicted his death to come out and say the date.
Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna state has dared the prophet who said that he would die if he fails to stop the proposed religious bill in the state. A few weeks ago, Apostle Johnson Suleman had in a broadcast, asked the Kaduna governor to reverse the proposed bill or he (the governor) would die, but the governor refused to listen to any of the prophet’s rantings about him and the proposed bill.

 In an exclusive interview with The Punch, El Rufai has now asked the prophet to mention the date that if he would die if he were truly an apostle of God, arguing that the law does not infringe on the rights of any Nigerian to freedom of worship. He said: “I have not seen anyone talking about Islam actually. Most of the people that say I would die, as if I would not die, are people who call themselves Christian clergy. Of course, I will die. If that apostle is truly an apostle, he should mention the day I will die.

Vanguard reports that the chairman of APC in Bayelsa, Timipa Tiwei Orunimighe and the secretary, Daniel Marlin announced the suspension of Sylva on Saturday, April 2 in Abuja.

Police websites crash as 8,000 applicants register

Attempts by many candidates to apply for enlistment into the Nigeria Police Force were frustrated on Friday as the two police portals for the recruitment crashed and were inaccessible for most part of the day.
The Police Service Commission had directed interested candidates to apply through its website, www.psc.gov.ngor that of the Nigeria Police Force, www.npf.gov.ng, but the two websites crashed due to huge traffic.
