Murtala Nyako, the impeached Adamawa state governor, was released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after 10 hours of questioning. Nyako was on June 1, Monday, surrendered to the anti-graft agency for the interrogation over money laundering charges.
The EFCC spokesman said that the 73-year-old politician had been released on “administrative charges”, based on his age and health concerns, Premium Times reports.
An EFCC official who spoke with The Punch on the condition of anonymity dismissed the reports saying that Nyako had been arrested:
“The former governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, is with our operatives now. You know that he was declared wanted and operatives have been in his trail since then.
“He was not arrested; he reported at the commission around 10am. Operatives have since commenced action and he is still being interrogated. He came back into the country on Saturday and reported to the commission.” Nyako voluntary returned from self-exile on Saturday, one day after Muhammadu Buhari’s inauguration. Vanguard recalls that following his impeachment last July, the EFCC moved against the former governor. However, the politician managed to flee to an undisclosed European country.
