MTN $5.2Bn Fine: No-Nonsense New Communications Minister Vows to Ensure Compliance

Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Shittu, minister of Communications, yesterday, has vowed to ensure strict compliance with the $5.2billion fine imposed on MTN Nigeria by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) for failing to deactivate 5.2 million unregistered SIM users.

MTN has November 16 deadline to pay the fine billion or face other sanctions.
Shittu, at a dinner organised in his honour by his friends, said his primary concern is the interest of Nigeria and said that “Every country has its laws and regulations and once you violate those laws, you pay what you are supposed to pay. The regulatory authorities fined them and I don’t think they are challenging that fine, so I don’t think I have any role to play other than ensuring that that regulation is enforced to the letter.”
