Fourteen-year-old Ese Oruru is now in the custody of the Federal Government, eight months after she was abducted from Bayelsa State by one Yinusa. Yinusa a longstanding customer of Ese’s mother, Mrs. Rose Oruru, had taken the girl to Kano, had her converted to Islam and forcefully married her.

Ese’s release followed the launch on Sunday of the “Free Ese” Campaign by PUNCH, which was embraced by Nigerians from across the country and beyond.

Second Lassa fever victim died in Ebonyi

Another Lassa fever victim has been confirmed death in Ebonyi bring the number of death so far recorded since the outbreak of the disease to two. This announcement was made by the state commissioner of health, Dr Daniel Umezurike, on Monday, February 29, while briefing reporters in Abakaliki. The disease claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy.

The commissioner explained that the deceased died at the weekend after being discharged from the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Vanguard reports. Dr. Umezurike said: “The incident is unfortunate. The deceased was a pupil of one of the primary schools in Igbeagu, Izzi Local Government Area.

The Government of Osun State on Friday February 19, 2016  cleared air on a speculation making the rounds in the state as it declared that no doctors have been relieved of their duties.

 The Chairman, Special Committee on Health, Dr. Simeon Afolayan, made the declaration  at a press conference held at the Ministry of Health Abere, Osogbo.

Afolayan who noted that were the government of Osun to follow the rules guiding the Civil Service, all the striking doctors would have been considered sacked for abandoning their duties for more than six months as stipulated in the civil service law.

The General Overseer of Agape Baptist Church, Pastor Oprite Amakiri, has been arrested and detained at the Rumuolumeni Police Division in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The 50-year-old randy pastor confessed to how he deceived a member of his church and raped her 18-year-old sister before he was exposed and dragged to the police.

Amakiri was said to have told about 200 members of his church that he had been battling waste pain for the past two years and stressed that God told him that a girl between the age of 12 and 18 years old would be needed to massage his waste for him to be healed.

Economic crunch: States suspend corps members’ allowances

Most state governments have suspended the monthly allowances being paid to members of the National Youth Service Corps due to the economic crunch affecting the country.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that some of the states stopped paying the allowances more than one year ago. Before the economic downturn, most states of the federation were paying stipends to the NYSC members deployed in their areas of jurisdiction in order to augment the N19, 800 the Federal Government was giving to the corps members.

The rate of sexual assault purported by migrants in some European Countries,is rapidly on the increase, just recently a Belgian journalist has spoken about the horrific moment she was sexually assaulted by a man live on television. 

Radio Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française (RTBF) journalist Esmeralda Labye was reporting from the Cologne carnival when a man of European appearance grabbed her breast.

Judge Orders Arrest Of Blogger, Seun Oloketuyi

Justice Jude Dagat of a Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the arrest of a blogger, Seun Oloketuji, charged with the offence of defamation and cybercrime.

The judge revoked the N3m bail with two sureties earlier granted to Oloketuyi on September 2, 2015 by Justice Mohammed Yunusa, who has now been transferred to the Enugu division of the court.
Justice Dagat, who is the new judge on the case, ordered that the accused be produced before him on March 11, 2016 when the case would be mentioned.
Oloketuyi, who was arraigned on August 25, 2015 and has since Septemeber 2, 2015 been on bail, was absent in court on Thursday when his trial was scheduled to continue before Justice Dagat.

S-Court decides Saraki’s fate today

 

The   Supreme Court will today, deliver judgment on the appeal seeking to quash the 13-count charge the Federal Government filed against the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, before the Code of Conduct Bureau.
The judgment will be delivered by a seven-man panel of Justices of the apex court, led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed.
The government had, in the charge it filed before the CCT, alleged that Saraki tampered with the assets declaration form he filled prior to his emergence as the Senate President.
He was said to have  deliberately manipulated the assets declaration form by making anticipatory declarations.

FG to probe 23,306 civil servants, banks

 

The Federal Government is concluding plans to probe no fewer than 23,306 federal civil servants, who have been accused by a panel of defrauding the government of millions of naira every month through an organised salary fraud.

The preliminary report of an investigative committee, set up to probe the alleged fraudulent payment of salaries to either ‘ghost’ workers or payments to multiple accounts, indicated that some banks would also be called to answer questions on the huge scam.

In a branch of one of the banks, over 300 accounts were said to have been opened in one day and all the accounts have become inactive.
